  66. There are many DOS shells on the market, but DF is small and fast.  Yet at
  67. the same time, DF is powerful and highly configurable.  DF lets you
  68. continue to use the utilities (such as file viewers) which you have become
  69. comfortable with but it ENHANCES those utilities by providing a scrollable
  70. environment from which they can be called.

  107. Note: in the interests of providing smooth integration, the current
  108. revision of the X-Ray file viewers is included as part of the DF460.ZIP
  109. archive.  Updates to the X-Ray viewers may be made available through
  110. electronic distribution as XRAYxxx.ZIP where xxx is the version number.
  111. The DF archive available through electronic distribution may not be
  112. updated solely to include new versions of the X-Ray utilities.

  121. Hardware Requirements and Important Information:
  122. ------------------------------------------------

  124. Directory Freedom does not require any special hardware to operate.  It has
  125. been tested across a wide range of IBM compatible hardware.  Graphics cards
  126. and hard disks are NOT needed to use this program.
  127.  
  128. The Directory Freedom user-defined commands and archive creators come
  129. preconfigured with command lines which use some common shareware and
  130. freeware software.  Most of this software is NOT supplied with DF.  If you
  131. do not have the appropriate programs on your system and accessible through
  132. your PATH statement, the pre-configured commands WILL NOT WORK out of the
  133. box.

  135. DF will function with DOS 3.0 and later (DOS 3.3 and later recommended).
  136. DF is no longer supported under DOS 2.1.
  137.  
  138. To run DF, you must set the DOS COMSPEC variable (e.g. SET
  139. COMSPEC=c:\command.com).  This requirement is discussed in detail in the
  140. manual.

  142. Directory Freedom is a shareware program.  If you use DF and find it
  143. useful, registration with the author is required.  Please see the
  144. REGISTER.DOC file for more information on registering.

  146. System Information Screen:
  147. --------------------------

  149. DF 4.60 includes a new system information screen which I think you'll find
  150. very useful.  I would like to mention here that, although this version
  151. (including the sysinfo screen) has been tested across a very wide range of
  152. hardware and software configurations, the sysinfo screen can probably not
  153. be totally accurate for all possible environments.  While I will try to
  154. incorporate changes for major new hardware such as the 80586 (or whatever
  155. Intel's calling it these days), it will in all likelihood not be possible
  156. to reflect every quirk of every clone on the market.  So, please send me
  157. any comments you have but don't expect DF to switch its focus from file
  158. management to system configuration information.

  164. I frequently am asked: "Where can I download future versions of DF when
  165. they appear?"  DF actually makes the rounds pretty well -- you can usually
  166. pick up a copy on most major BBS's.  To make certain of a few specific
  167. locations, however, I will try to make sure DF gets to the following
  168. boards.  The name is always DFxxx.yyy where xxx is the revision number and
  169. yyy is the archive name (typically ZIP for now).  So, for example, this
  170. version is DF460.ZIP.
